It began in 1996, when credit unions experienced a metamorphosis – they hoped to better serve the underserved by taking more risks in their loan departments. Sub-prime lending was one solution. Unfortunately, a majority of them didn’t realize the preparation, knowledge, and risk management required in this type of lending. After only a short time, the credit unions were seeing an excessive amount of fraud and application manipulation, and lost substantial money in their sub-prime portfolios. It was an epidemic that pushed many to abandon their programs.
Despite these setbacks however, the sub-prime lending market continued to be a lucrative strategy, if managed appropriately. Thus, ACC Consumer Finance was born.
